PHILOSOPHY

The Akron-Urban Minority Alcoholism Drug Abuse Outreach Program, Inc.’s basic philosophy is that addiction is best treated and prevented when the cultural dynamics of the group being targeted is addressed and included in the process of recovery and education.

Akron-UMADAOP, Inc. believes that addiction is a primary, progressive, chronic, fatal and treatable illness, which cannot be cured, but can be arrested. It is an illness of the total person, which has physiological, psychological, social-cultural and spiritual components and, therefore, requires a holistic approach.

The philosophy of Akron-UMADAOP, Inc. is that substance abuse education, prevention and treatment efforts must be culturally specific if the needs of the minority community are in reality going to be addressed.
